ABSTRACT The status of women in India has been subject to many great changes over the past few millennia. Volumes can be written about their heroic deeds and sacrifices from the Vedic period to the modern times. In ancient India women occupied a dignified and high place of respect in the society as mentioned in Rigveda and other scriptures. But with the invasion of foreigners, social, political and economic changes, women lost their status and were relegated to the background.
